MSSQL on Linux: Failed to allocate memory for Common Language Runtime (CLR)

Microsoft.SQLServer.Linux.EventRule.DBEngine.Failed_to_allocate_memory_for_Common_Language_Runtime__CLR__5_Rule (Rule)

The rule triggers an alert when SQL Server is unable to allocate memory for CLR.

Knowledge Base article:

Summary

This error may happen when SQL Server is starting. During start up sequence, SQL Server needs a few kilobytes of memory to run the Common Language Runtime. If this memory is not available SQL Server may not be able to start.

Causes

This error is raised when there is not enough memory to run the CLR.

Resolutions

First, try to restart the server. If SQLServer fails to start, check Linux system and application logs to identify errors related to system overload or memory pressure. Verify that there are no hardware issues. Increase the amount of available memory. Restart the computer and try to start SQL Server again. If the problem persists, contact a product vendor.
