Computer Not Reachable

Summary

This unit monitor will generate a critical state on Heartbeat failure if the target Health Service computer cannot be reached through an ICMP ping.

This is an indication that the target Health Service has lost network connectivity to its parent Management Server.

Note that you will see 2 alerts when the computer is offline:

• An alert for heartbeat failure

• An alert for the computer that is not responding to ICMP ping

When the computer network connectivity is restored and the Health Service starts to heartbeat, then both alerts will be automatically closed.

Causes

This can be caused by:

• Target Health Service computer is not plugged/connected to the network

• The network infrastructure (e.g. routers/switches) supporting communication between the target Health Service and its parent Management Server are experiencing problems.

Resolutions

You can try the following to diagnose and remediate this issue:

• Perform a trace route to check if there is packet loss to a router or switch to the target Health Service. You can use the tracert.exe utility in Windows. If you have Window XP or Windows Server 2003 and higher, you can use pathping.exe

• Physically check the target computer to ensure it is connected or plugged into the network

• Check with your network administrators if there are any known issues or outages that may be affecting the target Health Service and its parent Management Server.
