DFS-R: Overlap with FRS Path

Microsoft.Windows.FileServer.DFSR.FrsFolderOverlapMonitor (UnitMonitor)

This object monitors replicated folder paths and creates a Warning alert if it detects that a folder is configured to replicate with both File Replication Service (FRS) and DFS Replication.

Summary

This object monitors replicated folder paths, and creates a Warning alert if it detects that a folder is configured to replicate with both File Replication Service (FRS) and DFS Replication. It does so by looking for the presence of DFS Replication Event 6402.

Causes

An unhealthy state of this monitor indicates that the root path of a replicated folder overlaps with a folder that is replicated by using FRS.

Note FRS has been replaced in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 by DFS Replication for replicating DFS folders and for replicating the SYSVOL folder in domains that use the Windows Server 2008 domain functional level. DFS Replication also replaces FRS for replicating DFS folders on servers running Windows Server 2003 R2.

Resolutions

Remove FRS

If FRS is no longer required, remove it from the affected servers to resolve this issue.

Relocate the replicated folder

To do so, remove the server’s membership in the replication group and recreate it. Doing so requires membership in the Domain Admins group or delegated permissions.

Caution: After enabling a replicated folder, DFS Replication performs the initial replication by using the primary member’s files as authoritative regardless of the age, potentially overwriting newer files.

Verification

This monitor resets to a healthy state after the issue is resolved.
