On the Configuration Manager site, the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) Scanner is still needed for Systems Management Server 2003 clients. The ITMU Scanner setup or a Configuration Manager client that is running a legacy synchronization advertisement, triggers the WSUS synchronization manager on the Configuration Manager site server to start a process (UpdateWSUSCatalog.exe) which puts the software updates information in Configuration Manager.
If this alert is raised it means that errors were encountered while software updates metadata was being synchronized from the downloaded .cab file into the Configuration Manager site database.
Legacy synchronization failures can occur because:
SMS_ Executive service is stopped or restarted on the site server.
The scanner package source might be remote to Configuration Manager site server and is currently not accessible.
The current site might be a child site and the update, which legacy synchronization is inserting, already exists but is owned by the parent Configuration Manager site.
