Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server has to have the parent WSUS server property (also known as upstream WSUS server) set correctly before it can synchronize updates. For the central Configuration Manager site, the parent WSUS server should be set to “Microsoft Update” and for software update point on the child Configuration Manager site, the upstream WSUS server is set to the name of the software update point role that is configured on the parent site. If the parent site does not have a software update point role configured, then the child site WSUS server can have the parent WSUS server set to “Microsoft Update”.
This condition could occur because:
WSUS_Configuration_Manager was interrupted while it was still setting the properties for WSUS server, which is to be configured as a software update point role for a Configuration Manager site. WSUS_Configuration_Manager retries configuring after one hour, by default.
WSUS synchronization was running when a change of upstream server was attempted, which should fail. WSUS_Configuration_Manager will retry synchronization after one hour, by default.
Site hierarchy changes that are repeated in quick succession, such as site attach or site detach, can leave the site is a state where the parent WSUS server property is set incorrectly. WSUS_Configuration_Manager retries after one hour, by default.
For more information, see the [Configuration Manager installation folder]\Logs\WCM.log.
