Knowledge Article: ID B06037800: Blade 12V under recommended voltage

Description

The service processor on the specified blade server detects that the chassis power module reaches or falls below the recommended voltage threshold.

Causes

A variety of causes could influence the voltage to exceed a high threshold or to fall below a low threshold:

  1. Obstructed airflow
  2. Bad component, such as an IO card, a voltage regulator module, a blade expansion unit, or other component
  3. Bad power supply
  4. AC outlet not supplying the correct voltage and current

Implications

The voltage event occurs when the state of a system voltage sensor changes with respect to a manufacturer-defined threshold. Identify and address the cause of the voltage problem at the earliest opportunity.

Resolutions

Perform these steps:

  1. Refer to the Problem Determination and Service Guide for the blade server or the documentation that came with the specified component for information about over voltage conditions.
  2. If the under voltage problem is occurring on all blade servers, look for other events in the log related to power and resolve those events.

Note: If the under voltage problem is occurring on all blade servers in the same power domain, the problem might be in one of the power modules that power that domain. Log in to the advanced management module to see the power modules that are associated with each power domain. Replace the power modules, one at a time, to see if the problem resolves.

Additional information

To find additional troubleshooting help, visit the "IBM Support & downloads" Web site, select "BladeCenter" for "Browse products for support" panel. At "Support & downloads quick start" page, select your product for "Choose your products", and "Troubleshooting" for "Choose your page", then select "View your page" for "See your results". To narrow the results, search with keywords that are related to this article, such as "fail", "Chassis", etc. in the "Search support" field at the right panel.

To download the latest firmware or drivers, visit the "Fix Central" Web site, select "BladeCenter" for "Product Group" (from the pull-down lists), select your product for "Product" (from the pull-down lists), select your product machine type for "Product" (from the pull-down lists), and select your operating system for "Operating system" (from the pull-down lists). You can refine the search by selecting the category of the download of your interest from the "Refine results" list.

To find the replacement part number (or the FRU number) for the component replacement, visit the "BladeCenter and System x Product Information - Servers" Web site, select your product from "IBM BladeCenter products" table. Then select "System service parts listing" for your product.
