Knowledge Article: ID W0010001 - (Windows) IBM Director Platform Agent Services are missing

Description

IBM Director Platform Agent*1 Services are either not installed at all or not installed properly on a Windows system.

IBM Director Platform Agent*1 Services, a basic subset (Level 1) of IBM Systems Director Agent, provide basic platform management functionality, such as hardware component discovery/inventory, health state reporting, and more, by communicating with system firmware (BIOS or UEFI) and/or management controllers like BMC (Baseboard Management Controller), RSA-II (Remote Supervisor Adapter), etc., through device drivers or operating system APIs.

Besides platform-specific hardware component instrumentation, IBM Director Platform Agent*1 Services also contain an SLP (Service Location Protocol) agent, an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) enabled CIMOM (Common Information Model Object Manager) on Linux, or a set of CIM mapping libraries to WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) on Windows.

See the "Additional information" section below for the download location.

Causes

IBM Director Platform Agent*1 Services are not installed at all or not installed properly.

Implications

On an IBM system, if IBM Director Platform Agent*1 Services are not installed at all or not installed properly, almost all of the hardware component instrumentations will not be available for systems management software, like IBM Systems Director Server or Microsoft Operations Manager.

As a result, the systems management software will not be able to discover hardware components or monitor their health. You will then have to use the individual platform tool, such as IBM DSA (Dynamic System Analysis), or the system"s BIOS boot menu and browse through the logs to determine the overall system health. This effort can be too time-consuming, especially when you are managing more than a few systems.
