Summary

SQL Server uses Service Broker and Database Mirroring endpoints for communication outside of the SQL Server instance.

An endpoint is a SQL Server object that provides the capability for SQL Server to communicate over the network. These endpoints let SQL Server to send and receive SQL Server Service Broker and Database Mirroring messages over the network.

Causes

This message is raised when an error occurs at the connection endpoint. The error is recorded in the Windows application log as MSSQLSERVER event ID 9642. The Windows log record contains information about the near-endpoint role, the far-endpoint address, the initiating error and the state of the conversation. The error was caused by the initiating error in the far endpoint. The error is recorded as MSSQLSERVER event ID 9642.

The states are defined in SQL Server 2016 Books Online under "sys.conversation_endpoints (Transact-SQL)".
