Removed ESM Canister

What Caused the Problem?

An ESM canister has either been removed from the drive tray or is present but is being reported as removed because it is not seated correctly. The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the recovery steps.

Caution: Electrostatic discharge can damage sensitive components. Always use proper antistatic protection when handling components. Touching components without using a proper ground may damage the equipment.

Important Notes

Recovery Steps

1

Use the location information in the Recovery Guru Details area to identify the affected drive tray and the location of the affected ESM.

Check the drive tray to determine if the affected ESM canister has actually be removed or is present but may not be seated correctly.

If...

Then...

The affected ESM canister is present

Caution:

Potential for Data Loss.

Make sure you correctly identify the canister listed as removed. Removing the remaining optimal canister while I/O is in progress can cause data loss.

Without removing the cables, remove the ESM canister.

  • Check the female side of the canister connector for dirty or plugged pin slots.

  • Look inside the enclosure that housed the canister and check the male side of the canister connector for damaged pins.

  • Clean any dirty or plugged pin slots and repair any damaged pins.

  • Reinsert the ESM canister and wait 40 seconds for the storage array to detect and register the ESM canister.

  • Go to step 2.

The affected ESM canister has been removed

If available, reinsert the removed ESM canister. If the removed ESM canister is not available, insert a replacement ESM canister using the following notes:

  • Make sure that the replacement ESM canister is the same as the ESM that is remaining in the drive tray (hardware type and firmware version).

  • If the affected drive tray uses ESM canisters with external switches, verify that they are set to the same values as the switches on the remaining ESM.

  • Wait 40 seconds for the storage array to detect and register the ESM canister.

  • Go to step 2.
