DFS-R: Service Shutdown Health

Microsoft.Windows.FileServer.DFSR.DirtyShutdownMonitor (UnitMonitor)

This object monitors the shutdown process of the DFS Replication service, and creates a Warning alert if the service shut down abruptly or if a volume hosting a replicated folder went offline abruptly.

Summary

Causes

An unhealthy state of this monitor indicates that replication is stopped until DFS Replication can validate its database against the local file system and rebuild it if necessary. This can occur for the following reasons:

The DFS Replication service stopped unexpectedly due to a loss of power or other issue.
The volume storing the DFS Replication database went offline unexpectedly.

Resolutions

Wait for unexpected shutdown cleanup to complete

No action is required.

DFS Replication automatically initiates an unexpected shutdown recovery process where the service validates the records stored in its database against the state of the corresponding replicated files on the file system and checks for any inconsistencies.

If the service determines that it cannot reliably recover from this condition, it will rebuild the DFS Replication service's internal database by performing an initial synchronization with another member of the replication group.

Verification

After the cleanup operation completes and DFS Replication logs Event 2214, this monitor automatically resets to a healthy state.

DFS-R: Unexpected Service Shutdown

The DFS Replication service has detected an unexpected shutdown on volume {0}. This can occur if the service terminated abnormally (due to a power loss, for example) or an error occurred on the volume. The service has automatically initiated a recovery process. The service will rebuild the database if it determines it cannot reliably recover. No user action is required.
